Forklift Tank Safety
The propane powered lift truck is amongst the most common kinds of lift trucks. These machines are powered by propane, which come with some considerations which should be accounted for. It is important that Personal Protective Equipment or PPE is worn at all times in order to be safe.
PPE
Propane is a very cold gas. It is very cold to touch because skin exposure can result in serious burns. Whenever you are exchanging the propane tank or re-fueling, be sure to wear a full face shield or goggles and thick gloves. PPE is a requirement to be used on site so as to keep the driver as safe as possible. PPE is a standard workplace requirement for the majority of businesses utilizing this machine and if the driver does not have the correct things on, such as safety goggles, steel-toe boots, a hardhat etc. than she or he may be banned from operating the equipment.
Check the Valve
If you are in the process of exchanging the tank, be sure that the valve on the new tank is absolutely turned off prior to connecting the fuel line. This is extremely important because when you are inserting the fuel line into an open valve, you will release the propane gas. This condition could lead to a potentially hazardous situation.
Fire Extinguisher
Another vital safety procedure to have implemented is to have a fire extinguisher nearby when the tank is being changed or fuel is being added. Nearly all companies have fire extinguishers located near the refueling station. It is better to have one close and not need it, than to require one and not have one handy. Nearly all safety rules require this is set up on site too.
Secure the Tank
Most propane tanks have either a strap or a restraining device to secure the tank to the machinery. Be certain that this device is functioning correctly and properly used so that you could prevent the tank from shifting or falling, because this can also result in a hazardous condition.
