Aerial Manlift Hazards
Aerial man lifts are personnel lifts like boom lifts, articulated boom lifts and scissor lifts that use an articulated boom or a series of linked, folding supports. These machines enables employees to get up high into previously inaccessible areas. In certain ways, these machinery have made construction a lot easier and safer, although, the general safety which comes with the unparalleled mobility of aerial manlifts has implemented a new list of dangers that can inadvertently result in serious injury or even death to unaware operators.
Falls
Falls from a man lift often happens when employees fail to or are unable to wear a safety harness or cannot secure the harness to the lift. Falls can take place when someone on the platform acts wrongly and takes part in an activity like for instance climbing the guard rails to gain additional height. In addition, mishaps could be caused if the ground-based operator causes the machine to move in an unexpected motion prior to the employee being properly secured.
Sometimes workers may fall when the lift's base is struck accidentally by a heavy thing. In this situation, the force of the blow below becomes amplified by the length of the lift, hence causing the worker to be suddenly catapulted off of the platform. Obviously this dangerous action has catastrophic results.
Tip-Overs
Sadly, boom lifts are easily prone to tipping over. Tip-overs can happen in any type of lift, but are more frequent in articulated boom lifts. As boom lifts can move both horizontally and vertically, they could change the machinery's overall center of gravity. Hence, if the lift is over loaded or parked on an incline of some sort, extending the boom to full length when it is in the wrong position can cause the machinery to tip over.
