Fuel Storage
In order to be safe, the smaller fuel canisters or the large refueling tank needs to be stored away from the main complex or building. Adding to the safety aspect, it is vital that "No Smoking" signs are clearly displayed in the vicinity. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a safe enclosure which could just be accessed by authorized personnel. It is essential for the safety of the operator, and everyone they work with, that these safety measures are strictly followed.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself needs to be protected. This task can use retraining systems like concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods can be used. It is also necessary to always have a fire extinguisher nearby at the refueling station. Moreover, anyone who is operating the fueling station is required to be trained and also must be trained to effectively and safely use the fire extinguisher. With regards to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators using a lift truck should be correctly trained. This training covers a classroom portion as well as hands-on training. After the training sessions have been finished, the person must be tested to be able to prove that they understand the training materials. A part of this training also covers the correct way of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also includes site-specific procedures as well as the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they might be driving.
Medical Treatment
There should be a Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS center situated within the facility where the forklift is operating. This center would include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents which are utilized on site. This will also include the acid in the lift truck battery, together with the propane which is used to refuel the unit.
The MSDSs sheets are required to be available to all workers all the time. For example, if an exposure incident occurs, the individual needs to be evaluated at once. If any medical attention is required, to must be given without any delay. Normally, if you are uncertain if medical treatment is required, as a general rule; have the injury examined by a medical professional if you really think it is severe. Better to be safe than sorry.
