Forklift Battery Safety
The big industrial sized batteries used to run electric forklifts must be charged frequently and properly maintained. Safety procedures must always be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is very essential to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is essential for workers working with a forklift battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG include goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both clothing and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place should be an emergency eyewash post. The route to the post must not be obstructed and a worker who is injured must be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging area in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While in the vicinity of a battery and charging area, open flames are not allowed. Never allow objects like for example lighters or matches to be used while an employee is checking the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also needs to be well ventilated. The recharging method can release fumes. These gases are both explosive and toxic.
